Back from the Brew Fest

May 24th, 2011 by Jaime - From the road

Well folks, we had an awesome trip and an awesome time down in Sacramento for the West Coast Brew Fest. We rocked the park, tasted some beer, then ran straight over to a friends wedding, and rocked that too. We had BBQ, beers, bonfires and good times. The tire blowing out on the freeway just North of Grants Pass, OR was a bit of a bummer. And everyone standing around watching and taking pictures while I changed the tire in the dark was also awesome icon wink Back from the Brew Fest But we made it safe and sound AND got some new tires for the van so now we’re ready to roll anywhere, anytime. Rock ‘n’ Roll!!

Thanks to everyone who fed us, hung out with us, picked up a cd and let us crash on their couches and floors.

Into the Studio

May 7th, 2011 by Jaime - Studio

We’re going in today to wrap up some parts on the new plugged in version of Woodbox with Strings, which will be released very soon! This new version of Woodbox will have all the original 8 songs from the album with 3 additional songs and all with full band, remixed and remastered. We’re also going to be starting recording on some new material that we’ve been working on.

We decided instead of trying to record one long album, we’re going to do a series of 3 smaller ep style albums (4-6 tracks each) that we will be releasing every few months over the next year. Our target is to release the first of this series at the beginning of summer.

If you have been to a show lately, then you’ve no doubt heard some of the songs that will be on the new ep’s, but there’s even newer material that will be sprinkled in that should be a nice treat.

Playing with Keegan!!

February 25th, 2011 by Jaime - Shows

So we somehow landed a fantastic gig, and opportunity, playing in the lounge at Mt Tabor Theater on March 7th. “Why is that cool?” you might ask. Well, Keegan Smith is having his opening night at Mt Tabor on the main stage that very same night.

If you don’t know who Keegan is, go check out his website: http://keegansmith.com/ and get ready to keep the evening of March 7th open.

We’re super excited about this show and we’ve been getting ready. We’ve got new songs, new jams, and a lot of high energy great fun for all those at the theater that night. So make sure you’re one of them!

Drumming Fashion Accessory?

January 17th, 2011 by Derek - Random Thoughts

Hello all,

This is Derek writing my first post here on the band’s blog. I’m the drummer for Jokers and Jacks. I’ll be occasionally posting pics, sounds, and text here to share with everyone. We have a practice space here in Portland that we share with another band. They’re pretty cool guys from what I hear (the others have met them.) On Saturday I noticed some interesting things the drummer for the other band had and decided to take a pic or two. What’s the verdict? Is this THE thing for drummers now? I don’t want to be behind the trend. icon wink Drumming Fashion Accessory?

The New Website!

September 17th, 2010 by Jaime - Updates

Hey Everyone,

It’s been awhile. We’ve been on a bit of a hiatus since we finished our last tour for the summer. It’s been nice to have some time at home, but now we’re itching to get back on the stage!

We’re going to keep it local for awhile (oh, you lucky folks of the Pacific Northwest) and we’ve got some really cool changes to our live set planned. Can’t wait to get out there and play some music for you!

To kick things off, I designed and built a new website which just went live last night. Browse around and make sure to check back often as we’ll be adding new content regularly. Also, keep your eye on the Shows page so you don’t miss us as we start getting back at it.

P.S. – We’ll be starting work on our next record soon and we’ve got a few new songs and some re-worked older tunes so get ready!

On The Road Again

August 16th, 2010 by Jaime - From the road

As we headed down Interstate 5 once again, we thought we’d better catch you up on the latest.

Played a set at the Pop Festival in Portland at the East End Club. Had a great time, and a great turnout. Thanks to all our friends and fans that turned up to have a good time with us. We are in Sacramento this week on Tuesday night, back at Harlow’s playing a set, and glad to be here to play for you folks again. Harlow’s is a great venue, and we were asked to come back and have another set there. This time we are on for an hour, and will be airing out some of our songs with some new arrangements. So, that’s the gig, Harlow’s Tuesday night August 17th. We will be on stage at 7:30, and will do a good set for you all with a couple of new things and some new arrangements. We’ll be looking for you there. The cover is only $10, so come on out and have a good time with us. Come early so we can hang out and see you all.

After that, directly back to Seattle for an appearance at the Pop Festival there on Wednesday night, and then home for a little sleep and a restful weekend. So, all you friends and fans in Sacramento, come on out and catch our set tomorrow night.

The Next Round

July 28th, 2010 by Jaime - Shows

Well, here we go on the next round of playing dates. We’ve been home for a few days, and caught our breath. Tonight, Wednesday July 28th, we’ll be playing at the Mt. Tabor Theatre in Portland Oregon. Just a short ride down the road from our place. Leon Russell is also there tonight and another band we are excited to play with, so come on out and give a listen. We will be in the lounge, and starting around 7 to 7:15 p.m.

Next we drive to Ashland Oregon to play at the Tease Restaurant/Bar. One of our favorite haunts in Ashland, it has a great atmosphere, great food, and great people. We have fun there and everybody has a good time. If you are anywhere near Ashland on Friday, July 30th, we’ll be starting up about 8:45 p.m. or so. Come in and spend the evening with us. That wraps up our July playing dates. More to come in August. We’ll catch up on the next blog.

Our July Tour

June 28th, 2010 by Jaime - From the road

A hearty hello to all our fans up and down the West Coast. We just finished up some studio work, and will re-release our CD Wood Box With Strings for the upcoming tour. We added some vocal harmonies and guitar on some of the songs. We like the sound and are packaging it up, ready for the tour.

We’ll be in San Diego for two shows starting on July 7th, then to LA for two shows, and later in the month at the Pop Overthrow Festival in LA. We’re also opening for Leon Russell in San Jose on July 21st, and then up to Ashland for a show on the way home to Portland. It looks like we’ll pick up a couple of additional shows on the way back north to Oregon. Check the schedule to see where we’ll be and come on out to a show.

We thoroughly enjoyed the great fan support on our last tour, and hope you all are coming out to see us this time around. We love to play for you. Send us an email and let us know which show you may be coming to. We’ll be showing up early for every gig to greet you.

June 14th, 2010 by Jaime - From the road

We had a great time at the Music Strategies Convention in Las Vegas! Met and played with a number of tremendous artists and came away with a whole new understanding of the music business. Our heartfelt thanks to Tim Sweeney for providing such a wonderful venue for artists from all over the world. And a special thanks to our friend Charlie Recksieck of Bigfellas for all his help and support.

A very special thanks to all our fans, friends and family who helped make this trip possible. We couldn’t have done it without you. You know who you are. And thanks to all the fans who came out to see us, even when you had to drive many hours in the desert to follow us around.

Now we’re off on the next tour of the summer, with gigs in Ashland, Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego. This tour will be followed up with multiple appearances at the Los Angeles, Portland and Seattle Pop Overthrow Festivals, presented by David Bash.

James Brown

November 15th, 2009 by Jaime - Random Thoughts

Is awesome.

I was just listening to the James Brown album The 50th Anniversary Collection, and there is some really fantastic stuff there.

Why don’t we have any popular funk/pop/r&b artists out there anymore? It’s great music, but there just isn’t anyone doing it anymore. If I’m wrong, please correct me and tell me who I should be listening to.

Bewildered, btw, is a fantastic song. Check it out.

First Post!

November 13th, 2009 by Morgan - Random Thoughts, Updates

Throughout our lives, my brother and I have been creating music as if there was nothing else that could satisfy our passions. My brother, Jaime May, began his journey into music with the guitar. He loved Led Zeppelin, Cream and the Beatles. He learned to play Black Dog and eventually tried to teach me. This didn’t work out so well.

Besides Led Zeppelin, he got very into the modern bands of the time. I remember when we slept in bunk beds. Before going to bed he would put on Smashing Pumpkins and that’s what we would go to sleep to. These were but a few of his influences. I loved these same bands, but as I got older, my music tastes began to differ from his quite a bit. I was enveloped in the sounds of the 60s and 70s. My passion for The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie and many other songwriters caused me to take a different approach to music.

I learned to play the drums before I could play much of anything on the guitar. But when I was 13 I finally decided that I didn’t want to be a drummer. I wanted to write songs that would affect people the way those artists’ songs affected me. So, I began learning more about the guitar and piano. After a while I was performing and writing my own original songs. Jaime was doing the same for many years before me due to having 6 years on me.

It never occurred to us then that we had totally decided our professions would be as musicians. It was almost a subconscious decision. The choice was a “no brainer’ to us. For a while, while I was in boarding school, Jaime and I had developed our music as separate entities. Being brothers, it was impossible for us not to hear each other’s music though.

Finally, at our cousin’s wedding in San Jose, California, we played Landslide by Fleetwood Mac together. We made harmonies to it and realized that both of our individual songs could be twice as good if we played them together. That’s how we became The Mays.

It has been three years since then and we have continued to work on our songwriting, harmonies, recording and live show together. Because we strengthened our abilities over that time, we figured we needed a different name that could identify us not just as brothers, but as songwriting teammates. This name became Jokers and Jacks.

I am 19 now and Jaime is 25 with a wife and child. We find ourselves in the midst of a distracted and confused world today, and have our own troubles as everyone does. But we have remained dedicated to our original purpose to be professional musicians. We wish to provide the world with new songs. Songs to be enjoyed, loved, laughed at or even hated. We just have a few things to say about life, and we’re doing it in the best way that we can.
